Smart meters are a step forward in how utilities measure and manage resources. As IoT devices, they have the ability to automatically measure and transfer data for electricity, water, and gas consumption. These smart meters use sensors to share this information, eliminating the need to send someone to manually read the meter each month. This makes billing and managing the infrastructure easier.

Reliable connectivity is essential for smart meters to work effectively. This is where Geospace comes in, leveraging our experience as the leading innovator and manufacturer of marine seismic solutions to create a family of highly ruggedized hydro products designed specifically for the water utility industry.

Geospace’s Hydroconn® AMR Water Meter Connectors have become the de facto standard for inline connectors, providing utilities with the watertight reliability they need. Our connectors are completely molded, removing the unreliable dependence on an adhesive bond.

Connector Strategies Matter

Infrastructure Decisions Impact Long-Term Operations

Hydroconn is Geospace’s family of smart meter connectivity solutions that help utilities maintain flexibility as their AMI infrastructure evolves. With more than 40+ million connectors deployed, Hydroconn products connect leading water meters and endpoints across multiple manufacturers, helping utilities avoid vendor lock-in.

    Infrastructure Evolves

    Systems Must Adapt over Time

    Mixed Deployments are Common.

    Flexibility Reduces Disruption

AMI systems will evolve over time, and connectivity decisions shape operational functionality. The reality of an AMI deployment includes mixed infrastructure, phased deployment, and legacy systems that remain. Those realities can create connectivity challenges, including field, splicing requirements, as well as inventory and installation complexity. With an intentional connectivity strategy, utilities will reduce field splicing, simplify installations, and improve long-term infrastructure.

    Key Features

    Watertight Reliability

Designed for underwater applications with a unique design that ensures total moisture sealing. These connectors are submersible to 30 meters.

    Robust Design

Special manufacturing processes improve cable/connector reliability for rugged field use.

    Durable Materials

Flexible TPU (Thermoplastic Polyurethane) and glass-filled TPU connector material. The cable jacket is made of TPU, and the connectors are molded.

    Strain Relief

Post-molded strain relief from cable to connector.

    Connector Frequently Asked Questions

Answers to Common Questions about Water Meter Connectors

How do Hydroconn connectors help maintain AMI flexibility?

Utilities often operate a mix of water meters, endpoints, and communication technologies from multiple manufacturers. Hydroconn® connectors help maintain AMI flexibility by enabling compatibility between leading water meter and AMI endpoint providers, reducing dependence on a single vendor ecosystem. This allows utilities to upgrade, replace, or expand AMI infrastructure without requiring wholesale replacement of existing metering assets.

What does OEM-agnostic meter connectivity mean?

OEM-agnostic connectivity means a product is designed to work across equipment from multiple original equipment manufacturers sometimes called OEMs rather than being limited to a single brand. Hydroconn® connectors support interoperability between a variety of water meters and AMI endpoints, giving utilities greater freedom to select the technologies that best fit their operational and budget requirements.

Why would a utility use a Hydroconn connector instead of a proprietary connector?

Utilities use Hydroconn® connectors to preserve infrastructure flexibility and avoid vendor lock-in. Unlike proprietary connectors that may only work within a single manufacturer’s ecosystem, Hydroconn products are designed to support compatibility across multiple meter and endpoint technologies. This helps utilities simplify AMI deployments, extend the life of existing infrastructure, and maintain more options for future upgrades.

What is the advantage of overmolded construction?

Overmolded cable construction provides enhanced environmental protection by creating a sealed connection between the cable and connector body. This design helps prevent water intrusion, reduces the risk of corrosion, and improves long-term reliability in underground meter pits and other harsh utility environments. Hydroconn® connectors feature overmolded construction and are designed to meet IP68 environmental protection standards.

What is the difference between Hydroconn and a Nicor connector?

The term “Nicor connector” is commonly used throughout the water utility industry to describe the Hydroconn AMI connectivity products designed, patented, and manufactured by Geospace from the beginning. There is confusion that stems from the early relationship between Geospace and Nicor. Nicor provided marketing support in the water utility market, where Geospace was an unknown. Nicor never made these cables and didn’t develop them. They helped educate utilities on the value of Geospace’s highly ruggedized, waterproof cables.

More recently, Nicor was acquired by Hubbell. Hubbell didn’t buy the manufacturing or ownership of the Hydroconn portfolio. Hubbell represents the product line in a marketing capacity.

      Are Hydroconn connectors BABA compliant?

Yes. Hydroconn® connectors are manufactured in Houston, Texas by Geospace Technologies, exclusively. Hydroconn connectors meet Build America, Buy America (BABA) requirements.

Domestic manufacturing helps utilities meet procurement requirements associated with federally funded infrastructure projects while supporting supply chain reliability.

The Hydroconn family includes Series III, Series IV, and Series V connectors, as well as HydroAdapt™ connectivity solutions designed to support flexible AMI deployments where BABA compliance is required.
